Quarantine Cleaning is Creating Woes for Solid Waste and Recycling

We have been receiving a lot of phone calls and emails regarding delays in trash pickup. We are following every complaint and getting the info to WastePro to make sure it is addressed. While we’re on the topic of trash pickup, a little info…

Arlington is NOT the only municipality experiencing this issue. Nationwide, trash is up, staffing is limited, and solid waste services are struggling to keep up with the demand.

Locally, the volume of trash and debris put out for collection is up by 33%! How? Well, since mid-March we’ve all been spending a lot more time at home. When we’re home, we create A LOT of trash. And on top of the regular waste, we are cleaning out attics, remodeling kitchens, landscaping yards, taking down old pools and swing sets, and cutting down trees. Then we put it out on the curb for WastePro to pick up. All of it. Old washing machines, mattresses, swing sets and swimming pools take up A LOT of room in a truck. When WastePro picks up all of these items their truck fills up, and they have to drive to a landfill several miles away to empty it before they can come back and pick up where they left off. The increase in trash and debris paired with the travel time for the trucks significantly increases the work and time it takes to complete a normal route.

Please know that we are following this issue closely and we take every phone call, email and complaint seriously, as does WastePro. They are doing their best to keep up with the increase in trash and debris, and hope to be caught up soon. Until then, we ask for your patience and understanding as we get through this.

Please note that trash pickup may be a day later per your normal trash day.
