How do I determine the zoning of a piece of property?
Zoning is designated through the Arlington Zoning Map. To determine the zoning of a piece of property, you can:

Can I open my business in any commercial space I find?
No. Arlington's Zoning Ordinance specifies which uses are appropriate in different zones and other requirements, such as parking. Before you sign a lease or purchase a property, be sure to contact the Planning Department and confirm your use is permitted there and can meet all requirements.
I have a proposal for a new Development. Can I talk with staff before submitting an application?
Yes. The Planning Department holds Pre-Application meetings monthly, generally on the second and fourth Mondays of the month. Please contact the Planning Department at (901) 867-2620 to schedule a pre-application meeting.
A Pre-Application Meeting can provide more clarification regarding the Town’s development and building process before an applicant spends too much time and effort with a proposal. This informal meeting allows staff to review the proposal in general terms and provide preliminary comments and observations. Town staff are also available to answer applicant questions about the property or process.
Do I need approval to renovate the exterior of my Business?
Yes. If you are planning to renovate the exterior of your Business (new paint colors, awnings, roof, signs, etc.), be sure to submit a Site Modification form to Town Hall first. Many minor changes can be approved administratively by staff, but more extensive changes will often require Design Review Commission approval.
Do I need a permit for interior renovations to my home?
No permit is required for aesthetic interior work such as new carpet or paint. Otherwise, if your work only involves interior renovations, remodeling, plumbing, or electrical you may contact Shelby County Codes directly.
What should I consider when planning an addition to my home?
